Despite billionaires spending a record-breaking $2 billion, Democrats win control of both chambers
Today, Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund (ATFAF) issued the following statement on Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress — despite record-breaking campaign spending by billionaire families, exceeding $2 billion. Exit polls identified affordability and taxing the wealthy and corporations as top voter concerns. ATF, our c3 affiliate will conduct polling this week in states including South Carolina, Nevada, and Michigan–where Democrats won key races– to assess how tax fairness and affordability messaging influenced voter behavior.
“The results are clear: voters are tired of an economy that puts billionaires and corporations first. No amount of political spending by billionaires can hide the real pain caused by trillions of dollars in cuts to health care, nutrition and public education. It can’t hide the rampant corruption we’ve seen as billions of taxpayer dollars flow to the same special interests making life unaffordable,” said Jodie Rubenstein, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund. “Many incoming members of Congress won their seats by promising to address the affordability crisis, in part by committing to policies that would tax the wealthy and corporations. The incoming majority has a mandate to lay the groundwork for those policies and seize opportunities to fight for affordability and accountability. In the coming weeks, Americans for Tax Fairness will launch a presidential campaign program urging candidates to put tax fairness and an economy that works for everyone at the center of their 2028 platforms.”
